We have two adorable little lion head rabbits that we love to spend time with. They free roam the upstairs when we are home and lately they have shown a lot of interest of getting on the bed with us. Trouble is that they are just so little that it is really difficult for them to make it up there.
I found this really awesome tutorial for DIY pet stairs from Build Basics but unfortunately it was plans for wooden pet stairs. It's a really easy to follow, very in-depth tutorial but I do not have the tools for wood crafting (hopefully in the future). I do however have double walled card board and a box cutter, so I decided that I could do this with cardboard instead of wood.
I bought a 24"x24"x24" double walled box and that turned out to be exactly the right amount of cardboard I needed. I made a paper pattern to use to cut the sides. I just wanted to make sure everything was straight and square.
In order to make everything sturdy I doubled up on the sides, support bars and the steps. I tripled up on all the cleats in order to get the width needed to hold up the steps. I used a heavy duty mounting tape to attach all the cardboard together. After the sides and cleats were assembled I was able to start to actually put everything together.
I used the mounting tape to attach the cleats. I may have had a little trouble getting these straight, lol!
I reinforced everything with hot glue. Not only does it dry fast but it also has a pretty good hold.
These amazing pet stairs came out super sturdy due to doubling up on the already double walled cardboard. I'm an adult woman and they can actually support me. This whole project cost me $10.50. So, if you do not have wood working tools like myself you can still head over to Build Basic and do it with cardboard. Or if you do have tools definitely do this project!! It was so much fun, and the bunnies absolutely love it!
