Cleaning Your Moonstone Jewelry
I am not normal, I have never claimed to be. While most little girls dream of fancy elaborate weddings, just the thought of such an event focused on me gives me extreme anxiety. I am not a spotlight kind of gal, I am pretty much a wallflower and very very OK with that. My wedding consisted of four people: my husband, myself, and our two friends. Anything larger and I would have had a major meltdown. With that being said I also went with a very non-traditional wedding ring.
I have a beautiful three stone moonstone ring from The Flying Fox Arts on Etsy. Although just as beautiful as traditional rings this stone has very different properties. Moonstone is a very soft gem compared to other stones. It scores 6-6.5 on the Mohns scale of hardness, where as diamonds score a 10. High heat or sudden temperature change can also cause your moonstone to break. It is not recommended to use ultra sonic, steam, or abrasive jewelry cleaning methods. The best method is very simple, mild liquid soap and luke warm water.
I usually soak my ring in a bowl of warm water and liquid soap for 5 to 10 minutes to loosen up the dirt. After soaking use a very soft toothbrush to clear away the gunk. Dry and polish your moonstone with a microfiber cloth.
As you can see in these before pictures the stones are pretty dirty and look a little brown.
After the cleaning process the stones look much brighter and have returned to their natural white color. I can never quite capture the blue flash of my stones in pictures, but they still look great after cleaning.
